Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate profiles of insulin-lke growth factor (IGF)s and IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)s in sera of women with endometriosis Methods: Serum IGF-I, free IGF-I, IGF-II, IGFBP-1, and IGFBP-3 were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay in women with endometriosis (n=80) and normal women without endometriosis (n=63). Results: Serum IGF-I concentration in women with early (161.6¡¾15.5 ng/ml, P<0.01) and advanced (154.0¡¾15.3 ng/ml, P<0.05) stage of endometriosis was significantly higher than that (105.3¡¾12.8 ng/ml) in normal control respectively. Similar pattern was noted in free IGF-I levels, but no significant differences in serum IGF-II, IGFBP-1, and IGFBP-3 concentrations between women with endometriosis and control women were noted. IGFs and IGFBPs concentrations were not different according to clinical stage of endometriosis. The sensitivity of serum IGF-I and free IGF-I in diagnosis of endometriosis was 72% and 74% respectively and their specificities were 55%. Conclusion: Serum IGF-I and free IGF-I concentration are significantly higher in women with endometriosis than in normal controls and may be useful as a adjunctive biochemical factors in diagnosing endometriosis.
